CROCHET SNOWFLAKE

Christmas crochet ornaments are so charming, and crochet snowflakes are among my favorites. Or maybe you call them snow crystals or snow flurries? Whatever the name, they’re beautiful.

These snowflakes are perfect as table décor, hung on the Christmas tree, tied onto gifts, or strung together into garlands. The possibilities are endless, and all you need is some yarn, a hook, and a spark of creativity.

MATERIALS

  • Yarn – The snowflakes can be made with any yarn you like (I used Gjestal 8/4 Baby Cotton)
  • Crochet hook – Use a hook suitable for your yarn (I used a 2.5 mm)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

STITCHES / ABBREVIATIONS US terms

GAUGE

  • Gauge is not important for this pattern, since the snowflake doesn’t need to fit a specific size.

NOTES

  • Read through the entire pattern before starting
  • “2 dc” – this means you crochet one dc in each of the next two stitches. If you were meant to work both into the same stitch, this would be clearly stated
  • ( ) – Everything inside brackets is worked into the same stitch. Example: (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc)
  • ** – Repeat everything between * and * as many times as instructed
  • Using a stitch marker can be helpful to mark the beginning of each round

PATTERN

R1: Ch 6, join with a sl st to form a ring (Photo 1)
R2: Ch 1, work 12 sc into the ring, join with sl st in the first st = 12 sc (Photo 2)
R3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 1 dc in next st, ch 3, *2 dc, ch 3*. Repeat from * to * 5 times in total. Join with sl st in top of first ch-3 = 12 dc + 6 chain spaces (Photo 3)
R4: Sl st into the space between the 2 dc. Ch 1, 1 sc in same space as sl st, *5 sc in ch-space, 1 sc between dc*. Repeat from * to * 5 times in total, 5 sc in last ch-space, join with sl st in first st = 36 sc (Photo 4)
R5
: Sl st in next st, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 1 dc in next st, (1 dc + ch 3 + 1 dc) in next st (this is the center stitch of the 5-sc group from the previous round), 2 dc, ch 1, skip 1 st, *2 dc, (1 dc + ch 3 + 1 dc) in next st, 2 dc, ch 1, skip 1 st*. Repeat from * to * 5 times in total. Join with sl st in top of first ch-3 = 6 dc-clusters with ch-spaces between (Photo 5)
R6:
Sl st into the ch-space to the right (you move slightly back into the ch-space in front of the starting ch-3 from R5). Ch 3, skip 3 sts, *1 sc + ch 5 + 1 sc + ch 7 + 1 sc + ch 5 + 1 sc) in ch-space, ch 3, skip 3 sts, (1 sc + ch 5 + 1 sc) in next ch-space, ch 3, skip 3 sts*. Repeat from * to * 6 times in total (replace the final sc with a sl st) = 6 large and 6 small «tips» of ch-spaces. Fasten off and weave in ends (Photo 6)

Tip:
If you want to hang up your snowflakes, attach a loop to one of the points using a ribbon, a small chain loop, or a simple piece of yarn.
